Learning pathways

At Futuris, we offer different learning pathways so that each student can choose a route that suits his or her talents, interests and future plans. Whether you have a practical mind or want to continue learning at a theoretical level – at Futuris you get the chance to develop in a way that suits you. We will guide you every step of the way and help you get the best out of yourself.

New pupils join our school in a bridge class that matches their primary school recommendation and any other information. At Futuris, we have bridge classes vmbo-b, vmbo-k and vmbo-t. Sometimes two learning pathways are combined in the bridge class. If you start in one learning pathway, it does not mean that you will stay there for four years. We are known for the fact that students can easily move on to a different learning programme.

What learning paths we have, you can read on this page.

Vmbo-basic

The basic vocational programme is for pupils who mainly want to do practical work. In addition to theoretical subjects, this programme includes many practical lessons. You learn by doing and you prepare for an advanced vocational programme. The focus is on skills needed in a profession, such as cooperation, planning and working independently.

Vmbo-kader

The framework vocational programme is intended for pupils who are looking for a good balance between theory and practice. You follow practical subjects in which you learn to work with your hands, but you also take theoretical subjects to expand your general knowledge. After this programme, you can move on to an MBO programme at level 3 or 4.

Vmbo-t

The theoretical learning pathway – or mavo – is aimed at pupils who want to progress mainly through theoretical education. No practical subjects are taught here, but you focus entirely on theoretical subjects such as Dutch, mathematics, English and more. This pathway prepares you for the mbo, but with your vmbo-t diploma you can also go on to havo.

Mavo/havo

The mavo/havo is for pupils with a mavo/havo recommendation who want to prepare for a possible mid-term transfer to havo. In this programme, you will be given extra challenges in theory subjects and will be prepared to possibly move on to havo 3 after two years. Mavo/havo offers pupils a solid basis for further study at havo level.

ISK

The International Transition Class (ISK) is for newcomers who speak Dutch insufficiently to join regular education. In the ISK, you receive intensive instruction in the Dutch language and we prepare you to move on to a regular class in secondary education. Our ISK offers a safe and stimulating environment where you can learn and grow at your own pace.

If you do not understand a lesson well or need help, you can always contact your teacher or mentor. Futuris also offers additional support through student coaches, remedial teachers and homework help.

Futuris ensures a safe learning environment by actively addressing bullying behaviour and appointing a confidential advisor to whom pupils can turn. There is a bullying protocol and the mentoring team plays an important role in identifying and resolving conflicts.

In the lower years, pupils are offered both theoretical and practical subjects. In year 1, you will be taught Dutch, English, mathematics/math, human & social sciences, biology, art education, technology, music, care, physical education, mentoring lessons, profile hours and counselling hours. In year 2, physics/chemistry, German (for mavo students) and services & products (for basic/framework students) are added.

Futuris prepares you for further education by teaching you both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The profile classes help you gain practical experience early on, while the mavo/havo classes are specifically aimed at moving on to havo. In addition, we offer guidance in the choice of subsequent courses.

At Futuris, we not only prepare you for an exam, but also make sure you get the skills you will need in the future. Whatever you are going to do. We call these skills the 21st century skills and they are important for your personal and professional growth. You can think about:

  • Communication: communicating effectively with others.
  • Collaboration: learning to work in teams.
  • Dealing with ICT: working with computers and other technologies.
  • Creativity: developing your own ideas and coming up with solutions.
  • Critical thinking: analysing and assessing information.
  • Problem solving: finding practical and smart solutions to challenges.
  • Social & cultural skills: interact well with others, regardless of their background.
  • Control over own actions: working independently and taking responsibility for your own learning.

Futuris offers vmbo-basis, vmbo-kader, vmbo-theoretical (mavo) and mavo/havo. You can read more about this on the page about learning pathways. We also have International Transition Classes (ISK) for non-native newcomers who do not yet speak sufficient Dutch to enter regular education.

At Futuris, we have five profile classes: sports, technology, expression, cooking and mavo/havo. When you enter our school in the first year, you can choose one of the five profile classes. You follow these classes throughout your bridging period, which lasts two years. In the profile classes, you take weekly classes that match your interests and talents.
